Australian Open tournament referee implements extreme heat policy

Soaring temperatures have forced nearly all matches at the Australian Open to be suspended after the tournament referee applied the extreme heat policy at Melbourne Park.

Temperatures have hit 43.3 degrees on day four of the grand slam, with tournament referee Wayne McEwen deeming conditions unsafe for players.

It is the first time the extreme heat policy has been applied at the Australian Open since 2009, when the tournament was suspended on consecutive days with temperatures reaching as high as 45 degrees.

Thursday's announcement came at 1.52pm, with all matches in play on the outside courts suspended once the set in progress was finished.

Play on the outside courts won't resume any earlier than 5pm.

However on Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, play continued with the roof on both courts closed at the conclusion of the set in play - barring any objections from the match referee. Read More..
