World No.2 Victoria Azarenka have registered fairly routine wins in her two matches played at Melbourne Park this year, but the Belarusian did experience her share of troubles in both those encounters. In fact in her opener, Vika came across the spirited challenge of the Swede Johanna Larsson who tested her to the core in the fiercely fought opening set as the pair remained toe-to-toe with each other in the initial 12 games.
However, at the end of the day, she successfully overcame Larsson’s attacking play as she went on to take that set in a tiebreaker and thereafter cruised through the next one to advance through to the second round. There she met Barbora Zahlavova who put up an outstanding show of her counter-punching abilities in the second set to turn it into a competitive affair.
Meanwhile, Yvonne Meusburger too had done quite well thus far at the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific as she went on to dispatch Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa in two highly competitive sets on Tuesday and then came back from a set down against the Serbian Bojana Jovanovski in round 2 to set up her date with the double Major winner in the round of 32.
