WPI inflation in May touched a five month high (highest level since December 2013) of 6.01 percent versus 5.3 percent in the previous month; negating positive trend depicted by consumer prices . This surge is courtesy higher food, fuel and and manufactured product prices. Core inflation in May jumped by 40 basis points to 3.8 percent.
Food articles index rose to 2.3 percent on a month-on-month (MoM) basis as food articles inflation saw an uptick at 9.50 percent versus 8.64 percent in the previous month. According to the data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry today, food items which became dearer during the month include coffee (23 percent), poultry chicken (7 percent), fish-inland (6 percent) and tea and fruits and vegetables (4 percent each).
The vegetable index shot up 6.7 percent (M-o-M). Manufactured products inflation hit a 13 month high of 3.55 percent in May versus 3.15 percent, M-o-M. Manufactured products index was up 0.5 percent on a monthly basis. Fuel and power group inflation also increased to 10.53 percent versus 8.93 percent in April.
