Rajapaksa returns gold, jewelry taken by LTTE to Lankans

The northerners whose valuables had either been stolen or deposited in the parallel banking set up of the LTTE were invited to Rajapaksa's official residence on Thursday to take possession of the valuables.

"I have given them more valuables than gold. I have ensured their freedom (by ending war with the LTTE)," Rajapaksa said.

His act of handing back the valuables which the military had taken possession during the victorious military battle with the LTTE is being seen as trying to reach out to the Tamil civilians in view of the Presidential polls.

Rajapaksa is pitted against his defector, the former Minister of Health, Maithripala Sirisena in January 8 polls, making the election a difficult challenge for the 69-year-old leader.

A deputy minister and at least three other lawmakers have also left the ruling coalition -- United People's Freedom Alliance.

Earlier in November, the National Heritage Party (JHU) announced it was exiting the government. As the main party of Buddhist monks, its departure could damage Rajapaksa's support in a country where Buddhists comprise nearly 70 percent of its population of 21.8 million.

Some 1,960 identified owners from Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi received their belongings, presidential officials said.

The highest number of them, 1,187 came from Kilinochchi, the former LTTE administration capital.

"The Army had to go to each and every house in the province to ascertain the rightful owners of these valuable  and this process took much time," said Lt Gen Daya Ratnayake, the Army chief.

The LTTE was engaged in an "armed conflict" with Sri Lankan government forces for nearly three decades, but were defeated in 2009 following the death of its chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.

NSA Ajit Doval meets Rajapaksa, opposition leaders in Sri Lanka

Discussing bilateral relations with Rajapaksa at the President's House here, Doval expressed satisfaction on the quality and range of relations between Sri Lanka and India.   

President Rajapaksa and Doval also discussed ways to further strengthen ties.

High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka Y K Sinha and several other senior officials accompanied Doval. Minister of External Affairs Prof GL Peiris was also present at the meeting with the President.

Apart from meeting Rajapaksa, Doval held discussions with Peiris and the Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapkasa.   

Doval also met several political party leaders on Monday. He met joint opposition candidate in Sri Lanka's polls Maithripala Sirisena, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and leaders of the main Tamil party Tamil National Alliance.

He also delivered the keynote address on Monday at the inaugural session of Galle Dialogue that has attracted representation from more than 60 countries around the world.   

The inaugural Galle Dialogue in 2010 was held with the participation of about a dozen countries.

Cooperation and collaboration among nations for maritime security were vital for the region instead of facing present security threats in the Indian Ocean as individually, Doval said in Galle.

He said that there were several maritime threats to the nations around the Indian Ocean.

"We are facing several maritime threats at present including smuggling, piracy and human trafficking," Doval was quoted as saying by the Island.

He said that the regional maritime routes were used by terrorists.

Doval said that sea and maritime security are important for interdependence of states.

He said the Indian Ocean has got one of the longest histories and it has provided the connectivity to world's largest civilizations.
  
The National Security Advisor said the Galle Dialogue would be a much greater achievement in time to come as seas are becoming important and interdependence is going to be a greater value with economies coming closer.   

Indian Ocean remains the ocean of peace that could be optimally utilised for the purposes of trade and commerce, he said.

The seminar discusses issues related to terrorism, piracy, drug smuggling and human trafficking. This is Doval's first visit to the island.

Rajapaksa is seeking a record-third term after announcing snap polls set for January.

Asia Cup: Pakistan have an upper hand in opener against Sri Lanka

The 12th edition of the Asia Cup will kick-start from Tuesday when defending champions Pakistan will lock horns with Sri Lanka at Fatullah, Bangladesh.

On papers, it`s quite difficult to judge which team is stronger. Both the teams have strong batting line ups and decent bowlers as well in their respective sides. But a few factors are in favour of Pakistan. In the last three ODI encounters between them, Pakistan have managed to snatch two wins against Sri Lanka`s sole victory.

Pakistan have a well-settled opening pair in Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shehzad, which can give them a good start at the top. Their all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has also been in good form and on the top of it, he has a good track record against Sri Lanka. He is a match-winner and can give Lanka a run for their money.

Apart from that, experienced Pakistani skipper Misbah-ul-Haq has scored seven half-centuries in his last nine innings, which means the in-form skipper will be high on confidence while leading his side in the opening match.

When it come to bowling, in Bilawal Bhatti they have a promising seamer, whereas Junaid Khan has the potential to give the Sri Lankan batsmen a tough time in the middle.

Though, Pakistan have an upper hand, they can`t take Sri Lanka lightly who have won the Asia Cup four times and are strong contenders to lift the trophy this time around as well.

Pak T20 captain Hafeez says he is unaware of team selection

कराची। पाकिस्तानी टी20 टीम के कप्तान मुहम्मद हाफिज ने ये खुलासा करके सबको हैरान कर दिया कि अफगानिस्तान व श्रीलंका के खिलाफ यूएई में होने वाले तीन टी20 मैचों के लिए जिस पाक टीम का ऐलान किया गया, उससे वो बेखबर हैं।

पाकिस्तानी टी20 टीम के कप्तान हफीज जब दक्षिण अफ्रीका से पाकिस्तान वापस लौटे तो एयरपोर्ट पर वो मीडिया को ये बताने से जरा भी नहीं हिचकिचाए कि जिस टी20 टीम का ऐलान किया गया है उसके बारे में ना तो उनसे राय ली गई और ना ही उन्हें सूचित किया गया। हफीज ने कहा, 'मुझे कुछ नहीं पता (टीम के चयन पर) क्योंकि मैं फ्लाइट में था और ना ही किसी ने मुझसे संपर्क कर मुझे यह बताने की कोशिश की। मुझे नहीं पता कि टीम में कौन-कौन है, अब जाकर देखूंगा कि टीम में किसको-किसको शामिल किया गया है।'

गौरतलब है कि पाकिस्तानी क्रिकेट चयनकर्ताओं ने जब पाक टीम का ऐलान किया तो उसमें शोएब मलिक और अब्दुल रज्जाक जैसे सीनियर खिलाड़ियों को बाहर रखा गया, जबकि उनकी जगह दो नए खिलाड़ियों, शरजील खान और हैरिस सोहेल को टीम में शामिल किया गया है। जाहिर है कि पाकिस्तानी चयन प्रक्रिया में कप्तान की भूमिका व कप्तान का चयन हमेशा चर्चा का विषय रहा है। पहले भी कई कप्तान इसको लेकर सवाल उठा चुके हैं

Khurshid Regrets PM not Attending CHOGM

कोलंबो। श्रीलंका में चोगम सम्मेलन में हिस्सा लेने गए विदेश मंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद ने प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह के कोलंबो न आ पाने पर अफसोस जताया है। उन्होंने कहा कि वह चाहते थे कि प्रधानमंत्री राष्ट्रमंडल शासनाध्यक्षों की शिखर बैठक (चोगम) में हिस्सा लेने आएं और जाफना का दौरा करें, लेकिन ऐसा नहीं हो सका। पत्रकारों से बात करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि 'क्या यह दुखद नहीं है? किसको जिम्मेदार कहेंगे? मैं चाहता था कि मेरे प्रधानमंत्री पहले वहां (जाफना) जाएं। मैं वहां जाने वाला दूसरा विदेश मंत्री था। परंतु मैं इसके लिए किसे जिम्मेदार कहूं। मैं इस बात पर निराश हूं कि उस इलाके में अपने प्रधानमंत्री को नहीं ले जा सका जहां हम 50,000 आवासों का निर्माण करा रहे हैं।'

उन्होंने कहा कि 'हम जाफना में जिन सड़कों और दूसरी परियोजनाओं का निर्माण कर रहे हैं, उसे हम उन्हें नहीं दिखा सके।' ब्रिटिश प्रधानमंत्री डेविड कैमरन ने शुक्रवार को जाफना का दौरा किया। आजाद श्रीलंका में इस क्षेत्र का दौरा करने वाले वह पहले विदेशी राष्ट्राध्यक्ष बन गए। खुर्शीद ने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह का भी चोगम की बैठक से इतर जाफना जाने का कार्यक्रम था, लेकिन तमिलनाडु के राजनीतिक दलों के विरोध के कारण सिंह ने दौरा रद्द कर दिया। प्रधानमंत्री सिंह को श्रीलंका के उत्तरी प्रांत के मुख्यमंत्री सी एस विग्नेवश्वरन ने जाफना का दौरा करने के लिए आमंत्रित किया था।

खुर्शीद ने कहा कि वह इसके लिए किसी को जिम्मेदार नहीं ठहराना चाहते। उन्होंने कहा कि 'यह लोगों को फैसला करने दीजिए कि उनकी रणनीति का क्या फायदा हुआ है। मेरा लक्ष्य है कि श्रीलंका के लोग अपने पैरों पर खड़े हों और उनके भीतर आत्मविश्वास पैदा हो।' इस मुद्दे पर कांग्रेस और सरकार के बीच विभाजन के बारे में पूछे जाने पर खुर्शीद ने कहा कि यह विभाजन नहीं, बल्कि अलग अलग विचार व्यक्त किया गया है।

Protest intensify in TN, Pondy demanding boycott of CHOGM

चेन्नई। राष्ट्रमंडल देशों के प्रमुखों के सम्मेलन (चोगम) की तारीख नजदीक आने के साथ तमिल हितैषी संगठनों का विरोध प्रदर्शन तो तेज और तीखा होता ही जा रहा है। केंद्र सरकार में भी इस मुद्दे पर मतभेद खुलकर सामने आने लगे हैं। चोगम से प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह के दूर रहने की मांग के समर्थन में सोमवार को दो केंद्रीय मंत्री जयंती नटराजन और वी नारायणसामी खुलकर उतर आए। दोनों केंद्रीय नेताओं ने प्रधानमंत्री से चोगम में शिरकत न करने की अपील की है।

केंद्रीय मंत्री जयंती नटराजन ने कहा कि श्रीलंका में तमिलों के साथ हो रहे अत्याचार और उनसे लोगों की गहरी संवेदना को देखते हुए प्रधानमंत्री को सम्मेलन में शिरकत करने श्रीलंका किसी सूरत में नहीं जाना चाहिए। उन्होंने इस संबंध में प्रधानमंत्री से मिलकर आग्रह करने की बात कही। 

प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय में राज्यमंत्री वी नारायणसामी ने कहा कि तमिलनाडु से चुनकर आने वाले अधिकांश कांग्रेसी सांसद व केंद्रीय मंत्री नहीं चाहते हैं कि प्रधानमंत्री चोगम में शिरकत करें। कुछ मंत्री इस संबंध में दबाव बनाने के लिए प्रधानमंत्री से मुलाकात भी कर चुके हैं। नारायणसामी ने बताया कि उन्होंने पीएम से श्रीलंका में हो रहे सम्मेलन में भागीदारी न करने का आग्रह किया है। 

गौरतलब है कि केंद्रीय मंत्री जीके वासन पहले से ही प्रधानमंत्री से इस सम्मेलन से दूर रहने की मांग कर रहे हैं।
