Thailand’s coup: Your questions answered

ROSEMONT, IL - MAY 29: Flying instructor David Schnaible (R) teaches wind tunnel flying to nine-year-old Liam Harrison at the iFly indoor skydiving facility on May 29, 2014 in Rosemont, Illinois. Guests at the facility are introduced to the sensation of free-fall skydiving as they are lifted into the air by fans which generate an upward draft from 80 to 175 miles per hour inside a 14-foot-wide circular chamber. The company operates about 30 similar facilities around the globe which are used for military and competitive skydiver training as well as recreation. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)Thai society is undergoing major change, and politics over the past decade has in part been a battle between the old royalist ruling class and an ascendant majority based in the north and northeast that has benefited from development and has begun to see itself as a political force.

Much of that struggle has played out around one man — former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire tycoon deposed by a 2006 coup who now lives in self-imposed exile to avoid a prison sentence on a corruption conviction. The issue of whether to support or oppose Thaksin and his powerful political machine has divided friends, families and the nation.

Thaksin entered politics by founding his own political party and buying the loyalty of local political bosses nationwide. He won a landslide election in 2001, and once in office he cemented his popularity among Thailand’s rural and urban poor majority with unprecedented populist policies. Thaksin was often accused of being arrogant and for bullying critics, as well as a failure to keep private business interests separate from the business of government. This alienated the educated, urban middle class and alarmed traditional ruling circles — royalists and the military — who perceived in his naked ambition a desire to usurp the prerogatives of the throne, or even destroy the nation’s revered monarchy itself...

Rupee up 9 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee strengthened by 9 paise to 62.59 against the US dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today on increased selling of the American currency by exporters.

Forex dealers said increased selling of the dollar by exporters supported the rupee but a lower opening in the domestic equity market and weakness in other currencies against the American currency overseas capped the gains.

The rupee had lost 12 paise to close at 62.68 on Friday weighed down by demand for the American currency from importers.

Global automakers look for dream market in rural India

Global automakers look for dream market in rural India

For global automakers, the dusty backroads of rural India could be the new El Dorado.

As economic torpor suffocates demand for new cars in India's megacities, incomes are growing faster in small towns and country areas. That's pushing the likes of General Motors and Honda Motor Co to fan out in search of buyers in places where fewer than 20 people in every thousand own a car - for now.

Standing firmly in the way are strong home-grown brands. With local services plentiful and repairs cheap, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, and Tata Motors Ltd dominate the rural vehicle market where foreign automakers are seen as expensive and distant.

Brad Hodge gets call-up for Twenty20 international

Brad Hodge has been called up to play for Australia in the remaining Twenty20 games against England.
Despite its success, the Australian batting line-up that pummelled England’s bowlers on Wednesday night could be significantly altered for the World Twenty20, with Brad Hodge a legitimate candidate to assume a finisher role for the tournament.

Hodge’s contentiously long absence from the national team - almost six years - is set to end on Friday, with the 39-year-old replacing South Africa-bound all-rounder Moises Henriques in Australia’s Twenty20 squad to face England at the MCG.

Despite the Victorian not being named in the initial squad, and Australia having a bulging list of top-order batting candidates, it is believed his chances of featuring in the tournament are good because selectors have been impressed by his ability to score heavily late in innings, which he demonstrated as part of the middle-order role he filled for Rajasthan in last year’s Indian Premier League. In his 21 IPL and Champions League matches last year, typically at number five or six, he finished unbeaten in more than half of his innings to average 55.86 at a strike-rate of 148.11.

Hodge has spent most of his limited-overs career in the top-order but said the shift was devised by his captain at the Royals, Indian great Rahul Dravid.   Read more..

Tiger Woods set to play at Delhi Golf Club on February 4

In what promises to be memorable visit, golf ace Tiger Woods is set to play for the first time in India. Woods, the world No.1 golfer, is reportedly slated to tee-off at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) on February 4.

Woods will be in the Capital for a short visit which has been planned by a motorcycle manufacturer with close connections to Indian golf. The event, hosted by the DGC, is likely to bring Delhi's golf into limelight as few of the top Indian golfers have a chance to rub shoulders with the legendary player. The US golfer is playing the Dubai Desert Classic over the weekend (January 30-February 2), where he will go head-to-head against rising star Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland. He will be flying directly to Delhi after the Dubai event.

"So far it is on but the final confirmation is yet to come," DGC president IVS Juneja is quoted as saying to the Times of India. The news of Woods visit has already sparked off prior arrangements at the DGC, which has been booked for the entire morning session.

Regular club members might not be able to enjoy their daily round of golf during Woods' visit. The 38-year-old will reportedly play the entire 18-holes of the course game from 08:25 (IST) to 12:30 (IST).

"At every hole, a different golf player will play with him," an insider said. "However, others will not be allowed to play in the morning as the entire golf course has been booked," he added.

Fresh after the Dubai event, Woods will be accompanied by his own caddie and his team of physiotherapists.

Inclusive growth should be guiding objective of UNDP: India

India has stressed that eradication of poverty and inclusive growth should be the “singular guiding” objective of the activities of the UNDP particularly in the post-2015 development agenda.

India’s Ambassador to the UN Asoke Kumar Mukerji said that the United Nations Development Programme’s strategic plan has given an explicit vision, the eradication of poverty and inclusive growth.

“This has to be the singular guiding objective of UNDP’s activities, as well as the critical benchmark of assessment, as the organisation proceeds forward in the implementation of the strategic plan, especially in developing countries,” Mukerji said at the first regular session 2014 of the Executive Board of UNDP.

UNDP Executive Board is made up of representatives from 36 countries around the world who serve on a rotating basis.

Through its Bureau, consisting of representatives from five regional groups, the Board oversees and supports the activities of UNDP, ensuring that the organisation remains responsive to the evolving needs of programme countries.

Mukerji said that for the UN development system as well as for the post-2015 development agenda to succeed, the starting premise has to be rooted in the “D of UNDP” and strongly anchored on issues of “development” alone.

“If we were to lose sight of this defining objective, and cloud ourselves with extraneous issues by trying to somehow connect them with development, we might end up doing the development agenda a great disservice,” Mukerji said.

He said given the mandate of the UNDP’s Global Programme, it is a “bit disconcerting” to note that even the phrase “poverty eradication” did not find mention in any of the five priorities of UNDP’s draft of the global programme.  Read more..

India's ICICI Bank posts slowest quarterly growth in four years

India's ICICI Bank Ltd posted its slowest quarterly profit growth in four years as the ability of corporate borrowers to repay loans declined and the amount of funds set aside for bad debt almost doubled.

India's biggest private sector lender, like rivals Yes Bank Ltd, HDFC Bank Ltd and IndusInd Bank Ltd , has had to contend with a wave of defaults by companies struggling to make ends meet as India's economy grows at its slowest pace in a decade.

As a result, banks have increased the proportion of funds they extend to consumers from whom demand for home and car loans in particular has picked up as banks open branches in new territories.

That shift helped ICICI on Wednesday report net profit of 25.3 billion rupees ($404.12 million) in October-December from 22.5 billion a year earlier. That compared with the 24.6 billion rupee mean estimate of 23 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net interest income, or the difference between interest earned and paid, rose about 22 percent to 42.6 billion rupees.

Tax expense rose 45 percent to 12.1 billion rupees, hurting profit growth.Read more..
