CBI ने केजरीवाल के प्रधान सचिव राजेंद्र कुमार को किया गिरफ्तार, कल होगी पेशी

सोमवार को दिल्ली सरकार को जोरदार झटका लगा है। सीबीआई ने दिल्ली के मुख्यमंत्री अरविंद केजरीवाल के प्रधान सचिव राजेंद्र कुमार व अन्य 4 अधिकारियों को गिरफ्तार कर लिया। राजेंद्र कुमार पर भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप हैं। कुमार के अलावा जिन अधिकारियों को गिरफ्तार किया गया है उनके नाम तरुण शर्मा, संदीप कुमार, दिनेश गुप्ता, अशोक कुमार हैं।

राजेंद्र कुमार पर सीबीआई ने पहले ही शिकंजा कसना शुरू कर दिया था। उनके व्यक्तिगत ईमेल आईडी से पांच ऑडियो क्लिप बरामद हुई थी, इसमें कथित सौदों को लेकर बातचीत होने का शक था, जिनकी जांच भी की गई थी। रजेंद्र कुमार सहित अन्य आरोपियों को कल सीबीआई पटियाला हाउस कोर्ट के सामने पेश करेगी।

अधिकारी के खिलाफ आरोप हैं कि उन्होंने पिछले कुछ वर्षों के दौरान दिल्ली सरकार के विभागों से ठेके दिलाने में एक खास कंपनी को लाभ पहुंचाया। एक निजी कंपनी को 2007 से 2009 के दौरान पांच ठेकों में कथित तौर पर 9.5 करोड़ रुपये का लाभ पहुंचाने के आरोप में राजेंद्र कुमार के खिलाफ भारतीय दंड संहिता की धारा 120 बी (आपराधिक षडयंत्र) और भ्रष्टाचार निवारण कानून की विभिन्न धाराओं के तहत मामला दर्ज किया गया था।  Watch News Videos in Hindi http://www.jagran.com/videos.html

इस भारतीय तेज गेंदबाज के तूफान से कहीं फिर ना उड़ जाएं वेस्टइंडीज के बल्लेबाज

भारतीय टीम ने वेस्टइंडीज के खिलाफ उनकी धरती पर आखिरी टेस्ट सीरीज वर्ष 2011 में धौनी की कप्तानी में खेला था। इस टेस्ट सीरीज में भारत ने वेस्टइंडीज को तीन टेस्ट मैचों की सीरीज में 1-0 से हराया था। इस पूरे सीरीज के दौरान इस भारतीय तेज गेंदबाज ने वेस्टइंडीज के बल्लेबाजों की जमकर क्लास लगाई थी और पूरे सीरीज में छाए रहे।

वर्ष 2011 में वेस्टइंडीज में हुए तीन टेस्ट मैचों की सीरीज को भारत ने जीता था और भारतीय तेज गेंदबाज इशांत शर्मा का इस सीरीज में धमाकेदार प्रदर्शन रहा था। इशांत ने इस सीरीज के हर मैच में कैरेबियाई बल्लेबाजों को परेशान किया और खूब विकेट लिए। तीन टेस्ट मैचों की सीरीज में इशांत ने कुल 22 विकेट लिए थे और 'मैन ऑफ द सीरीज' रहे थे। इशांत ने पहले टेस्ट की दोनों पारियों में 3,3 दूसरे टेस्ट मैच की दोनों पारियों में 6,4 और तीसरे टेस्ट मैच की दोनों पारियों में 5 और 1 विकेट लिए थे।

वेस्टइंडीज दौरे पर विराट का मुख्य हथियार इशांत शर्मा ही होंगे। उनके पिछले प्रदर्शन को देखते हुए ये उम्मीद की जा रही है कि वो वहां एक बार फिर से कामयाब होंगे। वैसे भी इशांत इस वक्त भारतीय गेंदबाजों में सबसे अनुभवी हैं और उनका अनुभव अन्य गेंदबाजों के काम भी आएगा। इशांत ने अपने करियर में अब तक 68 टेस्ट मैच खेले हैं जिनमें उनके नाम 201 विकेट है।

नोएडा, ग्रेटर नोएडा व यमुना प्राधिकरण के चेयरमैन पर आखिरकार इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट ने गाज गिरा दी। हाईकोर्ट ने एक बड़े आदेश में तीनों प्राधिकरण के चेयरमैन रमा रमण के कामकाज पर रोक लगा दी है। वरिष्ठ आइएएस अफसर रमा रमण की नियुक्ति को लेकर एक बार फिर कोर्ट ने अखिलेश सरकार के कामकाज को लेकर खिंचाई की है। हालांकि अभी तक प्रदेश सरकार की इस पर कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आई है।

बता दें कि हाईकोर्ट ने पूर्व में भी प्राधिकरण में रमा रमण की नियुक्ति को लेकर सवाल उठाए थे। तब कोर्ट ने सरकार से पूछा था कि आखिर सरकार की रमा रमण की तैनाती के पीछे क्या मजबूरी है। वह इतने वर्षों से प्राधिकरण में क्यों तैनात हैं।

रमा रमण के अधिकार जब्त

शुक्रवार को एक बार फिर इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट ने अपने सख्त निर्देश में रमा रमण के अधिकार जब्त करने के आदेश दिए हैं। कोर्ट ने कहा कि प्राधिकरण चेयरमैन के अधिकार जब्त कर उनके कामकाज पर तत्काल रोक लगाई जाए।

NIA का दावा, ISIS के संपर्क में थे हैदराबाद में गिरफ्तार संदिग्ध

राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी (एनआईए) ने गुरुवार को दावा किया कि यहां गिरफ्तार किए गए पांच व्यक्तियों को पश्चिम एशिया स्थित आतंकवादी संगठन आईएसआईएस से भारत में आतंकी गतिविधियों की सजिश रचने और उन्हें अंजाम देने के लिए दिशानिर्देश मिल रहे थे।

आईएस के साथ संलिप्तता वाले एक गुट से जुड़े होने के संदेह और बम हमले की साजिश रचने के आरोप में एनआईए द्वारा शहर से गिरफ्तार किए गए पांच संदिग्धों, मोहम्मद इब्राहिम यजदानी उर्फ इब्बू, हबीब मोहम्मद उर्फ सर, मोहम्मद इलयास यजदानी, अब्दुल्ला बिन अहमद अल अमूदी और मुजफ्फर हुसैन रिजवान को को एक स्थानीय अदालत में पेश किया गया जिसने उन्हें 14 दिन की न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया।

एनआईए के अनुसार प्रारंभिक जांच के दौरान पाया गया कि गिरोह आतंकी कृत्यों को अंजाम देने के लिए आईईडी तैयार कर रहा था और इसके लिए गिरोह को एक ऑनलाइन हैंडलर से दिशा निर्देश दिए जा रहे थे। ऐसा संदेह है कि हैंडलर इराक या सीरिया में था। एजेंसी ने कहा कि आगे जांच जारी है।

इससे पहले एनआईए ने पुख्ता जानकारी के आधार पर पहले एक मामला दर्ज किया था कि हैदराबाद के कुछ युवक और उनके साथी देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में धार्मिक स्थलों, संवेदनशील सरकारी इमारतों समेत सार्वजनिक स्थानों पर आतंकी हमले करने के लिए हथियार और विस्फोटक सामग्री एकत्र करके भारत सरकार के खिलाफ युद्ध छेड़ने की साजिश रच रहे हैं।

अब मुश्किल में चीन, NSG पर भारत के खिलाफ दांव पड़ सकता है उल्टा

कहते हैं कि राजनीति और कूटनीति में समय का बहुत ज्यादा महत्व होता है। जो फैसला आप के पक्ष में न हो इसका मतलब ये नहीं है कि आप उम्मीद छोड़ दें। 24 जून को सियोल बैठक में एनएसजी में भारत की दावेदारी पर चीन की चाल कामयाब हुई। लेकिन चीन अब मुश्किलों में है। उसकी मुश्किल के पीछे कई वजह हैं। जिसे क्रमवार जानने को कोशिश करते हैं।

सियोल में चीन के मुख्य वार्ताकार वैन कून ने चीनी शासन को भरोसा दिलाया था कि 48 सदस्यों वाले एनएसजी के एक तिहाई सदस्य चीन का समर्थन करेंगे। लेकिन वैन कून की रणनीति और कूटनीति औंधे मुंह गिर गई। चीन समेत महज चार देशों ने भारत की दावेदारी का विरोध किया। जानकारों का कहना है कि सियोल के परिणाम से भारत को जितनी निराशा हुई हो, उससे कम धक्का चीन को भी नहीं लगा। चीन को यकीन था कि कम से कम 15 देश उसका समर्थन करेंगे।

चीन को ये सब इतना नागवार लगा कि उसने मुख्य वार्ताकार वैन कून की सार्वजनिक तौर फटकार लगा डाली। चीन प्रशासन वैन कून की रणनीति पर सवाल उठाता रहा।

साउथ चीन सागर पर चीन की मुश्किल

साउथ चीन सागर के मुद्दे पर चीनी रणनीतिकार मुश्किल में हैं। बताया जा रहा है कि इस मुद्दे पर हेग आरबिट्रेशन से कुछ दिनों में फैसला आ सकता है। विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि ये फैसला चीन के खिलाफ जा सकता है। आरबिट्रेशन कोर्ट फिलीपींस के समर्थन में फैसला सुना सकता है। कोर्ट के फैसले का मतलब ये होगा कि फिलीपींस की हड़पी गयी जमीन को चीन को वापस करना होगा। इस फैसले का इससे भी बड़ा असर ये होगा कि चीन युनाइटेड कन्वेंशन ऑन द लॉ ऑफ सी से बाहर हो सकता है जिसका वो सदस्य है।

भारत के पास है मौका

चीन को इस बात का डर है कि आरबिट्रेशन कोर्ट के फैसले के बाद भारत वही दांव खेल सकता है। जिसे चीन ने सियोल मीटिंग के दौरान किया था। जानकारों का कहना है कि हेग फैसले का हवाला देकर भारत, चीन को अकंलास से बाहर करने का दबाव बना सकता है। भारत को इस मुद्दे पर समर्थन जुटाने में मुश्किल भी नहीं आएगी। चीन का कहना है कि उसे 60 देशों का समर्थन हासिल है जो ये मानते हैं कि हेग आरबिट्रेशन अवैध है।

पश्चिमी देशों का भी मानना है कि साउश चीन सी के मुद्दे पर चीन को अलग-थलग होने का डर सता रहा है। चीन हेग आरबिट्रेशन के फैसले का इंतजार कर रहा है। हालांकि चीनी रणनीतिकार उनके हित में आड़े आने वाले कानूनों की वैधता पर ही सवाल उठा देते हैं। इसके उलट अगर अवैध कानून उसके हित को साधने में मदद देते हैं, तो चीन उन कानूनों को वैध बताने में गुरेज भी नहीं करता है।

भारत से लड़कर कभी भी कश्‍मीर नहीं जीत सकेगा पाकिस्‍तान: हिना रब्‍बानी

पाकिस्तान की पूर्व विदेश मंत्री हिना रब्बानी खार ने कहा है कि पाकिस्तान कभी भी भारत से युद्ध कर कश्मीर को नहीं पा सकता है। इसके लिए भारत से सिर्फ संबंधों को सुधारना और वार्ता को जारी रखना ही एकमात्र जरिया हो सकता है। रब्बानी ने यह बातें पाकिस्तान के एक न्यूज चैनल पर इंटरव्यू के दौरान कहीं। पाकिस्तान के अखबार द डॉन के मुताबिक उन्होंने इस इंटरव्यू में यह भी कहा कि पाकिस्तान को इसके लिए अनुकूल माहौल बनाना होगा और भारत से बातचीत जारी रखनी होगी।

कश्मीर के मुद्दे पर पूछे गए सवाल के जवाब में उन्होंने कहा कि युद्ध इसका उपाय नहीं है, इसलिए बातचीत ही एकमात्र उपाय है। यह तभी संभव है जब हमारे संबंध भारत के साथ सामान्य होंगे। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि भारत और पाक को एक दूसरे पर विश्वास करते हुए इस मुद्दे पर आगे बढ़ने की जरूरत है। खार ने कहा कि पीपीपी सरकार भारत के साथ रिश्तों को सुधारने के लिए काफी प्रयास किए। इसके लिए सरकार ने वीजा नियमों में भी कुछ छूट दी और दोनों देशों के बीच व्यापार को सुधारने के लिए भी काफी कदम उठाए। उन्होंंने साफ कहा कि दोनों देशों के बीच यह मुद्दा वर्षों पुराना है और यह किसी भी तरह से सही माहौल बनाए बिना इसको सुलझाया नहीं जा सकता है।

गौरतलब है कि हिना रब्बानी खार वर्ष 2011 से 2013 तक पाकिस्तान की विदेश मंत्री रही थीं। उन्होंने कहा कि इस मुद्दे पर लगातार बातचीत के जरिए किसी नतीजे पर पहुंचा जा सकता है। विदेश नीति मे फौज का अधिक प्रभाव होने के सवाल पर उनका कहना था कि एक डिप्लोमेट के नाते कई सारी चीजें जारी रहती हैं और सभी को साथ लेकर बैलेंस बनाते हुए आगे बढ़ा जाता हैै।

भारत की मौजूदा भाजपा सरकार पर अपनी राय देते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि भारत में भारतीय जनता पार्टी की सरकार रहते हुए और पाकिस्तान में फौज की हुकूमत रहते हुए कश्मीर का मुद्दा कभी नहीं सुलझ सकेगा। उनका कहना था कि वह मानती हैं कि मुशर्रफ ने अपनी सरकार के दौरान भारत को इस विषय पर काफी ढ़ील दी थी।

पाकिस्तान और अमेरिका के संबंधों पर पूछे गए एक सवाल के जवाब में उन्होंने कहा कि इस क्षेत्र में चीन की दखल को रोकने के लिए अमेरिका भारत को बेहतर सहयोगी मानता है। इसके साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि अमेरिका के भारत की ओर झुकने की एक बड़ी वजह है कि वहां पर देश की जनता की चुनी हुई सरकार है न कि फौज की हुकूमत चलती है। भारत में आज भी डेमाेक्रेटिक ट्रेडिशन मौजूद है।

#JagranForum: ऊर्जा मंत्री पीयूष गोयल बोले, बिजली पर न हो सियासत

दैनिक जागरण के फोरम ‘बढ़ेगा प्रदेश तो बनेगा देश’ को संबोधित करते हुए केंद्रीय ऊर्जा, कोयला और नवीकरणीय मंत्री पीयूष गोयल ने कहा कि केंद्र में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के नेतृत्व वाली सरकार की नीति के चलते ही यह संभव हो पाया है। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री ने सरकार बनने के वक्त हर घर में बिजली पहुंचाने के लिए साल 2022 का लक्ष्य तय किया था। लेकिन ऊर्जा मंत्रालय की कोशिशों के चलते इसे तीन साल पहले ही पाना संभव हो गया है।

पूरे देश में विद्युतीकरण के कामकाज पर केंद्र की तरफ से निगरानी की जा रही है। विद्युतीकरण के लिए होने वाले आवंटन का उचित इस्तेमाल हो इसी निरंतर निगरानी हो रही है। इसके चलते बीते दो वर्ष में विद्युतीकरण के कामकाज में तेजी आई है।

 तीन साल में हर घर में बिजली

केंद्र सरकार ने हर घर में बिजली पहुंचाने के लक्ष्य को तीन साल कम कर दिया है। सरकार अब साल 2022 के मुकाबले 2019 में ही हर घर में बिजली पहुंचाने की स्थिति में है। इतना ही नहीं एक हजार दिन में प्रत्येक गांव में बिजली पहुंचाने के लक्ष्य को भी केंद्र एक वर्ष पहले ही पूरा करने की स्थिति में आ गया है।

देश में बिजली की कमी नहीं

गोयल ने कहा कि देश में आज न केवल बिजली सरप्लस में है बल्कि इसके निर्माण की प्रमुख आवश्यकता कोयला भी सरप्लस में है। यही वजह है कि आज किसी बिजली प्लांट में कोयले की कमी नहीं है। केंद्रीय ऊर्जा मंत्री ने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के कुशल नेतृत्व के चलते एक हजार दिन में प्रत्येक गांव को बिजली से जोड़ने के काम को भी समय से पहले ही पूरा कर लिए जाने की उम्मीद है। प्रधानमंत्री के निर्देशानुसार पहली मई 2018 तक यह काम पूरा होना था। लेकिन आज की स्थिति में यह स्पष्ट है कि यह काम पहली मई 2017 तक ही पूरा कर लिया जाएगा। 18452 गांवों में से बीते दो साल में आठ हजार से अधिक गांवों में बिजली पहुंच चुकी है।

राज्यों के विकास के लिए बिजली जरूरी


ऊर्जा मंत्री ने कहा कि किसी भी राज्य के विकास के लिए बिजली एक अहम कारक है। लेकिन उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार में अभी भी करोडो़ं परिवार ऐसे हैं जो बिजली से वंचित हैं। देश में बिजली उपलब्ध है लेकिन राज्य जनता की जरूरतों के बावजूद बिजली खरीद नहीं रहे हैं। इसका क्या अर्थ है? गोयल ने कहा कि यह मानसिकता से जुड़ा है कि कोई राज्य अपनी जनता को किस रफ्तार से विकास की तरफ ले जाना चाहता है।  Read more http://www.jagran.com/

Uni gunman 'wanted to kill many'

A judge found probable cause to hold Aaron Ybarra, 26, wthout bail, a day after he was arrested for shooting that killed student Paul Lee, 19, and wounded two other young people, one critically, at Seattle Pacific University in Washington state.

In a statement filed in court, Seattle police said Ybarra admitted to detectives after his arrest that he wanted to kill as many people as possible and then himself.

But instead, a student building monitor pepper-sprayed and tackled Ybarra as he reloaded his shotgun. Police said the gunman had 50 additional shotgun shells and a hunting knife.

There have been a series of horrific shooting sprees in the US in recent years, amid a fierce debate over the

country's gun laws and its system for dealing with mental health issues.

Several of the attacks shave been on or near university campuses. About two weeks ago, according to police, Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured seven before turning his gun on himself in a rampage in Isla Vista, California, near two universities.

The US' spy agency CIA has joined Twitter and Facebook, becoming an instant hit on the social media while sparking online debates over the move.

In a matter of less than nine hours, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had attracted 268,000 followers on Twitter on Friday.

And its first tweet, was re-tweeted as many as 170,000 times. Nearly a lakh people made it their favourite tweet.

After seven hours of CIA's debut on the micro-blogging site, the American spy agency made its second tweet. This time it was to thank its followers.

"Thank you for the @Twitter welcome! We look forward to sharing great #unclassified content with you," it said.

Pakistan's MQM chief Altaf Hussain released on bail in UK

Pakistan's powerful MQM chief Altaf Hussain was released on bail today, four days after he was arrested here by the British police on charges of money laundering.

The 60-year-old exiled leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was arrested on June 3 from his north London home and taken to a central London police station for questioning.

"The 60-year-old man arrested on Tuesday June 3 on suspicion of money laundering has been released on police bail to a date in July pending further enquiries," a police statement said without naming Hussain.

Hussain was questioned for seven hours last evening, BBC reported.

He was transferred to a hospital for check-ups after being arrested on Tuesday. He returned to Scotland Yard custody yesterday after spending three days in the hospital...

Mounties arrest ‘Rambo’-styled suspect in triple cop killing, ending massive manhunt in Canada

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they arrested early Friday morning 24-year-old Justin Bourque, who is suspected of killing three officers in New Brunswick in one of the worst mass shootings in the Mounties’ history. Bourque had been the object of a massive manhunt in eastern Canada since Wednesday evening.

Paul Greene, a spokesman for the Mounted Police, said the suspect was taken into custody about 12:30 a.m. Friday. The suspect was reportedly armed with high-powered rifles and spotted three times while evading the nearly 30-hour manhunt.

Residents of the city in southeast New Brunswick were told they could resume normal life after a lockdown, during which they were told to stay inside and bolt their doors.

The shooter, dressed “Rambo”-style in camouflage and a headband — and armed with at least two rifles and a crossbow — had been on the loose since his confrontation with police, which reportedly began when someone called in a report about an armed man in the neighborhood about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, ABC News reported. Police responded to the scene and five officers were shot. The two surviving officers were injured.

As of Thursday morning, the whole town of Moncton, where the shootings took place, was all but shut down as police from around the country searched for the suspect. Police urged local residents to keep their doors locked and turn on exterior lights to help out police...

D-Day 70th anniversary: World leaders gather for ceremony

World leaders are joining hundreds of veterans in Normandy to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Heads of state will meet at Ouistreham, one of the five beaches where Allied troops landed on 6 June 1944.

French President Francois Hollande will give a speech followed by US President Barack Obama. The Queen and Russian President Vladimir Putin will also go.

There will be a re-enactment of the landings, which were the start of the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe.

ANALYSIS: Abe refocused attention from Ukraine to China at G-7 summit

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe walked a diplomatic tightrope at the first Group of Seven summit meeting without Russia in 16 years, as he tried to divert world leaders' eyes from the Ukrainian crisis and focus on China's maritime advance.

While the official dinner of the G-7 summit in Brussels on June 4 was dominated by the Ukrainian crisis, Abe brought up the issue of China's growing presence in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

In calling for support, Abe compared the expansion of China's activities in the region to Russia's ongoing violation of Ukraine's sovereignty.

"It must not be permitted for a country to challenge the status quo by force anywhere in the world," he told the G-7 leaders.

As a result, the leaders said in their joint statement that they are "deeply concerned by tensions in the East and South China Sea."

Abe also made it clear that Japan is distancing itself from the hard-line stance United States has taken toward Russia over the Ukrainian crisis and called for G-7 countries to continue dialogues with Moscow.

"It is important to pressure Russia to commit itself to the problems that the international community is now facing as a responsible stakeholder," Abe said.

The prime minister's statements reflect Japan's concern that further isolation of Russia from the G-7 nations might push Moscow to rekindle its ties with Beijing.

Such a scenario would be undesirable at a time when Japan needs to counter the rising military might of China. It could also further delay a settlement of the territorial dispute over the Northern Territories.

Tibetans, Uyghurs Remember Own Crackdowns on Tiananmen Anniversary

Exile Tibetan and Uyghur groups on Wednesday marked the 25th anniversary of the Chinese government’s massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators at Tiananmen Square by pointing to what they described as Beijing’s use of deadly force to suppress their own struggles for greater freedom and rights.

Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama offered prayers Wednesday for those killed in the June 1989 assault, saying they died for freedom, democracy, and human rights—values he called the foundation of a “free and dynamic society.”

“They are also the source of true peace and stability,” said the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive national uprising in Tibet against Chinese rule.

“While great progress has been made to integrate China into the world economy, I believe it is equally important to encourage China to enter the mainstream of global democracy,” the Dalai Lama said in a statement.

“This will help China to gain the trust and respect of the rest of the world, enabling China to fulfill its potential in playing a leading role in global affairs.”

The Dalai Lama's statement came ahead of a campaign to be launched on Thursday by the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Tibet’s Dharamsala, India-based government in exile, in a new push for its "Middle Way" approach for greater autonomy for Tibetans within China.

Beijing has ruled Tibet with an iron fist since 1951, a year after invading the Himalayan region. It further tightened controls since unrest spread across Tibetan regions from Lhasa in March 2008.

The CTA says about 220 Tibetans died and nearly 7,000 were detained in the subsequent region-wide crackdown. The Chinese government says rioting killed 22 people.

A total of 131 Tibetans have also set themselves ablaze to date in self-immolation protests calling for Tibetan freedom, with another six setting fire to themselves in India and Nepal...

Underwater sound heard in jet hunt

AUSTRALIAN researchers have released data about an unusual underwater sound recorded around the time Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished.

However, the lead scientist put the chances of it being linked to the missing Boeing 777 at less than 20 per cent.

The low-frequency sound was picked up by under­water listening devices in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia on March 8 this year, the same day the plane disappeared on a flight from Malaysia to Beijing with a total of 239 people on board.

Researchers at Curtin University, Western Australia, have analysed the signal to see if it may be the sound of the plane crashing into the ocean.They admit the noise could have come from a small earthquake.

Obama suspends Iran oil sanctions for six months

 With Iran complying with its commitment on a controversial nuclear weapons programme, US President Barack Obama has suspended his action on Iranian oil sanctions for the next six months.

Even though there is enough oil in the international market for countries like India and China to reduce their dependence on Iranian oil, so as to avoid US sanctions as per Congressional Act, Mr. Obama determined that there is no need to do so for the next six months as Tehran is fully co-operating with the US-led international community to address their concerns about its nuclear weapons program, the White House said on Wednesday.

“While market conditions suggest that there is sufficient supply to permit additional reductions in purchases of Iranian oil, the United States has committed to Obama suspends Iran oil sanctions for six months and

pause efforts to further reduce Iran’s crude oil sales for a six month period under the Joint Plan of Action between the P5+1 and Iran,” the White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney said.

“In return for this and other limited relief measures, Iran has committed to take steps that halt and in key respects roll back progress on its nuclear programme.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has verified that Iran is complying with these commitments,” he said.

The analysis contained in the Energy Information Administration’s report of April 24, indicates that global oil consumption has exceeded production in recent months, he said, adding that this resulted in a small withdrawal from global oil stocks, in line with rates earlier this year.

“Global oil supply disruptions in recent months increased compared with earlier this year, but the resulting supply reduction was offset by increased petroleum production, particularly in the United States,” Mr. Carney said.

Global surplus crude oil production capacity has increased modestly in recent months but remains lower than a year ago, he noted...

Supreme Court rejects Subrata Roy's plea for house arrest, lifts curbs on sale of assets

In a setback to Sahara chief Subrata Roy, who is in jail for the last three months, the Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed his plea to be put under house arrest but allowed the group to sell properties to mobilise Rs.5,000 crore in cash and an equal amount in bank guarantee for securing his release.

"The prayer for shifting the contemnor outside the jail is dismissed," a bench of justices TS Thakur and AK Sikri said while reading the operative parts of the judgement that dealt with the modifications of the earlier order.

The Sahara chief, who is in Delhi's Tihar jail since March 4, was earlier directed by the apex court to pay Rs 5,000 crore in cash and furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 5,000 crore as pre-condition for his release. Sahara group has been given a go ahead to sell immovable properties in nine cities here, the bench said in its verdict today and made it clear that they will not be sold below the circle rate and buyers should not be "connected or related" to the group.

The sale proceeds will be deposited in a separate bank account, maintained by market regulator SEBI, which, in turn, will release the title deeds of the properties in favour of the purchasers, it said. The bench also lifted the curb put on encashment of Sahara group's fixed deposits and bonds and said that they will also be kept by the market regulator.

Dealing with the issue of sale of equities held by Sahara group in three offshore hotels, the bench said it is keeping the issue open as the group has to file an affidavit relating to its communication with the Bank of China which had lent it money. The bench, which allowed Sahara group to mortgage its properties in Aamby valley in Pune for arranging the bank guarantee, said that the guarantee, to be furnished, either be given from a nationalized or a scheduled bank. It said bank guarantee of a cooperative bank will not "suffice".

East Ukraine sees fresh violence

 Heavy fighting broke out Monday in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk as NATO diplomats held talks in Brussels with Russia on the crisis.

Pro-Russian separatists said at least five people were killed and at least 10 injured in an airstrike on their headquarters in the regional government building in central Luhansk, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.

A local health official said at least two people were killed and dozens injured, the report said.

A massive explosion rocked the city centre about 4 pm (1300 GMT) after fighter jets started circling over Luhansk, local media reported.

Government officials suggested the separatists had caused the explosion, with Defence Ministry spokesman Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskiy telling Ukrainian media that careless handling of explosives was a likely explanation.

The UNN news agency later quoted a Luhansk police source as saying the explosion was probably caused by a heat—seeking anti—aircraft missile fired from the separatist—occupied state security building.

“The rocket changed course and hit an air conditioner fixed outside an administration window,” the report quoted an unnamed witness as saying.

Photos showed black smoke coming from a window on the fourth floor and heavy damage just below. The rest of the building’s facade appeared intact...
