Narayani rock brought salvation to the Pitrion

Tough to change Somdev’s defensive mindset: Amritraj

India’s Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj said it was difficult to change Somdev Devvarman’s defensive approach towards his game as the country’s number one singles player struggled to close out his match against Ti Chen despite earning four match points.

The second singles of the Davis Cup tie was stretched to the second day as bad light forced suspension of play when the two players were locked 7-7 in the deciding fifth set.”It’s a bit difficult for him to get out of that mindset,” Amritraj said when asked if Somdev played too defensive.

“He can grind but it’s not possible against a guy who is going for broke. I told him to hit hard but he was just pushing the ball around. I don’t think he will sleep well,” the 61-year-old added.Amritraj said he was “very impressed” with the way Chen played and admitted they underestimated the Chinese Taipei player.

“He (Chen) played very confidently. He was volleying superbly. We are lucky that we are still in and unlucky that we are not 2-0 up,” he said. Yuki Bhambri, who handed India 1-0 lead by beating Tsung Hua Yang, clarified that he suffered only cramps and “nothing was serious”.

He added the conditions suited him and that was the key to his success. “I had got used to the bounce and perhaps he did not. It (ball) was coming to my shoulder and I was comfortable. The conditions were good, suited me more.”

Yuki praised Yang despite the fact the Taipei player could not take advantage when he was struggling with cramps. “He played well. It’s not easy when you play against a player, who is not 100 per cent fit. It becomes different as you don’t know what is expected of the injured player.”  Yang said the Indian had the advantage of playing at home.

There were a few calls which Chinese Taipei team did not like but their captain Liu Tai Wei said, “We have no control over those things and we could only fight on court. I am happy with my players.”

Scotland will meet UAE in ICC World Cup Qualifier final

Warner-Park-Sporting-Complex
Scotland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will lock horns in the final of the ICC World Cup Qualifier at Lincoln Oval on Saturday in a match that will determine which pool they will join in the ICC World Cup 2015.

The two teams secured their positions in the final, as well as a spot in the ICC World Cup 2015, after recording victories on the last day of the Super Six stage on Thursday.

Scotland and UAE now complete the 14-team line-up for the 2015 event, and will compete alongside the 10 Full Members, Afghanistan and Ireland.

The winner of the final will join Afghanistan, four-time champions Australia, co-host New Zealand, Bangladesh, three-time finalist England, and 1996 winners Sri Lanka in Pool A of the ICC World Cup 2015.

The losing finalists will be placed in Pool B along with defending champion India, Ireland, 1992 champions Pakistan, South Africa, two-time winners the West Indies and Zimbabwe.

The sides have already faced each other once during this tournament, in a group encounter that Scotland won by 53 runs thanks to a rapid-fire century by opener Calum MacLeod (113 from 97 balls).

Prior to that, the UAE and Scotland last locked horns in 50-over cricket in two ICC World Cricket League Championship encounters in March 2012, which the UAE won by four and two wickets, respectively.

The UAE, who were the number-one ranked side for the tournament, go into Saturday’s final as the leading team from the Super Six stage, having sealed their spot at the top of the table with a 36-run victory over Namibia at Rangiora Oval here on Thursday.

The UAE will be searching for their second trophy, having won the tournament in 1994. That victory led to the side’s only appearance in the ICC Cricket World Cup, in 1996, where the team recorded a seven-wicket victory over the Netherlands.

UAE skipper Khurram Khan was thrilled to see his side qualify for their second ICC World Cup.

“You can’t describe in words the feeling. I’ve been playing for UAE since 2001 and it is an amazing feeling to help my team to qualify,” said Khurram.

Reflecting on his side’s performances to date in the tournament, the skipper felt that his side had the all-round capability necessary to reach the final.

“Everybody chipped in. The top order scored runs and the fast bowlers replied to the call and played superbly. It’s just called teamwork.

“The hard work we have put in has paid off. The way we have worked together and performed when we needed to,” said Khurram.

Scotland secured their spot in the final after recording a nail-biting three-wicket victory over Kenya at Hagley Oval.

Seeded third in the tournament, Scotland finished second in the Super Six table to advance to their third ICC World Cup, having previously played in 1999 and 2007. The side also won the qualifying tournament in 2005.

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen said that qualification to the 14-team ICC World Cup 2015 was a momentous occasion for his side

“It is absolutely awesome, we have worked really hard to get to this position and to actually get over the line is unbelievable,” said Mommsen.

Most bowlers today don’t seem to have a plan: McGrath

Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath. Photo: V. Ganesan
Indian cricket’s search for a potent pace attack seems eternal, especially after the 4-0 mauling at the hands of New Zealand in the ODI series. It was only apt that a battery of media persons got to interact with fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath and elicit his views on that and the ICC’s latest proposals as he starts his second year as the Director of Coaching at the MRF Pace Foundation on Friday.

Excerpts

On the latest ICC proposals that seek a greater role for the BCCI, ECB & CA

I haven’t seen much of the news lately. But, at the end of the day, cricket is an international game. Everyone [every country] should have a fair say.

On India’s bowling woes in New Zealand

I didn’t see too many of the games. So it’s hard to comment. In India you don’t get much bounce and carry. But when you see wickets that have them it’s easy to get carried away.

In such conditions, a bowler needs to do less rather than trying too many different things.

Lack of pace, a problem for India?

It does help when you have a Mitchell Johnson or a Dale Steyn. But the ball can come off the bat quicker too.

It all comes down to control, having a game plan and executing it.

A lot of bowlers I see these days don’t seem to have a plan. They are just running in, bowling and hoping.

On Zaheer’s non-inclusion in the Indian one-day squad

If a bowler is in good form, pick him. For the youngsters, working with a bowler who has been there for years is invaluable. That’s the best thing any young guy coming in can get.

On Ishwar Pandey

It’s great to see him in the Indian team but it’s a shame that he didn’t get a run in the ODIs. I think he would have done ok.

Let’s see how it goes in the Tests. I am impressed with him. If he get’s a chance to play, I think he will do well.

On the Pace Foundation’s future plans

We are looking at a scenario where top India pace-men can come here. We also want to work with State coaches, get their inputs and, in the process, produce better bowlers.

We are negotiating with the BCCI. It’s in the final stages.

WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT: Does Salman Khan need to reinvent his image?

The collections of Salman Khan's Jai Ho have been below expectations, starting Bollywood's year on a dismal note. Trade pundits, critics and many among the superstar's fan base felt something was amiss in the film and that Salman needs to reinvent himself.

Salman's first release in well over a year - his last film was Dabangg 2 in December 2012 - will not create any new records even if it scrapes through to become a hit. The façade of riding a message on the common man has indeed gone for a toss.

The box-office outcome of Jai Ho, touting Salman's brother Sohail Khan as director, is glaring because the film was expected to break a few records created by the actor's bête noire Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express and buddy Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3.
Jai Ho has
performed below
expectations, starting Bollywood's year on a dismal note
Jai Ho collected a meagre Rs 60.68 crore in its first three days compared to Dhoom 3, which collected Rs 107.61 crore, and Chennai Express (Rs 100.35 crore). This, despite Salman's film releasing across 5,000 screens worldwide.

One By Two Movie Review: You will get pakaoed!

This Abhay Deol starrer aims for quirky and interesting but ends up disastrously tedious, unfunny and entirely disengaging!

The concept was interesting no doubt. Meant to be a coming of age romantic comedy for the two, thirty (meant to be 20) something protags who go through life’s struggles trying to find their innate selves and end up meeting each other.

Do not expect any chemistry or sparks to fly, or for that matter, any passion, because the two only become really aware of each other towards the end.

This is a feature that has three-fourths of its runtime devoted to tedious, exasperating and entirely un-invigorating exposition- which in analytical terms is an unviable imbalance in content.

The title in fact says it all. Right from the opening credits which are played out on screen in two distinct halves, we are left with no doubts as to where this film is going.

Amit (Abhay Deol) is an IT geek hopelessly in love with Radhika. But she doesn’t appear as enamoured and before the credits end, she has dumped him for a hot-shot TV dance show producer, Ranjan. Amit though, is desperate to win her back and right to the very end exploits this desperation to unbearable limits. Playing out parallelly is Samara’s story.

Samara (Preeti Desai), the London returned, love child born out of an illicit relationship between a stinking rich Industrialist, Mahtani (Anish Trivedi) and his alcoholic mistress (Lillette Dubey), has issues of abandonment and is yet searching for a stabilizing factor in her life. Dance is what makes her whole but the manner in which it is displayed we wonder at her colossal self-delusional ego.

The choreography credited to Ashley Lobo is just not the kind that showcases grace, agility or flexibility. It’s uninterestingly pedestrian and makes you wonder why anyone would choose Samara as a competitor for a much publicized and extremely popular dance show.

The story flits between the two somewhat parallel universes, that intersect superficially from time to time and after about two hours plus of unbearably stretched out runtime, comes to a common meeting point.

Brahimi wants resumption of Syria talks Feb 10

Musharraf’s Request to Leave Pakistan for Treatment Is Rejected

A special court on Friday rejected a request by the former military ruler Pervez Musharraf to leave Pakistan for medical treatment and instead issued arrest warrants in the treason case against him, according to lawyers in the case.

Mr. Musharraf was also directed to appear before the court on Thursday to be formally charged. Previous attempts to bring him to court for indictment have failed, including on Jan. 2 when he complained of heart trouble on the way to a hearing and was taken to a military hospital in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, the capital, where he has remained since.

The three-member court, led by Justice Faisal Arab, is trying Mr. Musharraf on charges that he subverted the Constitution in late 2007 when he imposed emergency rule and fired much of the judiciary. Mr. Musharraf, 70, denies the charges, calling the case a “political vendetta.”

Anwar Mansoor Khan, one of Mr. Musharraf’s lawyers, told the court that Mr. Musharraf needed an immediate heart scan, or angiography, but wanted the procedure to be performed abroad, preferably in the United States.

Critics and prosecutors, however, maintain that Mr. Musharraf is using his request to seek treatment abroad as an excuse to avoid standing trial here and go back into exile.

On Friday, the judges ruled that there was no justification for Mr. Musharraf not to appear before the court. The arrest warrants the court issued are bailable, and Mr. Musharraf’s lawyers said they would deposit bond of about $20,000 in the next few days to keep him out of jail.

A spokesman for Mr. Musharraf criticized the ruling.

“The special treason court has not only shown inhumanity and insensitivity toward General Musharraf, but also has demonstrated unprecedented disregard of the medical profession, principles of basic fundamental rights and preservation of life,” the spokesman, Raza Bokhari, said in a statement.

There was speculation that Mr. Musharraf might be allowed to go abroad for medical treatment as part of a deal brokered between leaders from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and the Pakistani military, to ward off any potential clash between the military and civilian government.

The military has officially kept silent about the trial, and the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which initiated the treason charges, has insisted that it has no control over judicial proceedings.

Hassan Wasim Afzal, a former senior civil servant who is now a political analyst, said the case against Mr. Musharraf had become contentious because of the composition of the court, which Mr. Musharraf’s lawyers have said is made up of judges who are already biased against the former ruler.

The treason trial is the most serious challenge Mr. Musharraf has faced since returning to the country from self-imposed exile last March. His ambition of reviving his political fortunes foundered after his party, the All Pakistan Muslim League, received a lukewarm response in last year’s general elections and he found himself ensnared in court cases.

Thawing sanctions against Iran put chill on anti-American feelings

The Iranian people reeled for years under western sanctions implemented because of the regime in Tehran’s secret pursuit of nuclear weapons. But with the so-called P5+1, made up of the U.S., Russia, China, United Kingdom, France and Germany, easing sanctions, many hope the economy will improve.

“The mood in big cities has become measurably more friendly towards the U.S., and this has been directly affected by the foreign relations with the west and sanctions,” said Iranian economist Mehrdad Emadi, senior economist at the London-based Betamatrix Consultancy.

In a nation where inflation topped 35 percent last year, unemployment hovers at around 15 percent and basic food and pharmaceutical supplies are both scarce and astronomically expensive, there is renewed hope for the economy and an end to pariah status.

“There is a calming effect amongst the populace suggesting they expect a brighter future and the dark mood has been at least partially lifted,” Emadi said.

A recent RAND study focusing on Iranian public opinion of the U.S. found most Iranians were in favor of reestablishing ties with America. Though some Iranians are in favor of the nuclear program, viewing it as a national program meant to strengthen their nation’s standing, they are disheartened by the economic and political isolation.

The current deal with the P5+1 meant to curb Iran’s nuclear program will release $8 billion in assets in the form of sanctions relief, gold, and oil sales in exchange for a freeze on certain aspects of Iran’s nuclear proliferation.

“Happiness is coming back to Iran. People are enjoying life more and there’s an overall air of positivity, and this all comes from creating a situation where nations can be friendly without boundaries,” said Nader, a coffee shop owner from Mashad, who asked not to be further identified.

Nader says there has been a significant drop in the price of airplane tickets, which is very important to Iranians who love to travel.

Over the last three decades, the Iranian regime has used negative propaganda against the U.S. as a political and mobilizing tool within the country.

Even in the hours following the announcement of the P5+1 deal in Geneva in late November, Iranian leaders zealously delivered the news back home as a ‘victory,’ and depicted the negotiations as a surrender by the West.

Iranian leaders however, used the moment to create national excitement about Iran’s future economy and strengthen the role of the regime, promising the Iranian people new opportunities with trading partners around the world.

U.S. and Germany Signal Willingness to Repair Strained Relations

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday signaled their willingness to repair a bilateral relationship strained by revelations about U.S. spying on Germany.

Addressing journalists alongside the chancellor before their meeting, Mr. Kerry called for 2014 to be "a year of renewal." However he offered no public assurance that Washington would refrain from further spying, as Berlin has demanded.

Mr. Kerry acknowledged the countries have been through a "rough period," after leaked documents from the fugitive former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden showed the U.S. National Security Agency monitored the German leader's cellphone. But Mr. Kerry said Germany and the U.S. "are partners above and beyond bumps in the road."

Ms. Merkel and Mr. Kerry also pledged to work together on other issues, such as eliminating Syria's chemical weapons and Iran's nuclear program, as well as forming a trans-Atlantic free-trade agreement.

In the first major address of her new term to parliament this past week, Ms. Merkel said she and Washington remained far apart in their views on espionage. She lashed out against the mass collection of communications data, which she said leads to mistrust between allies, ultimately diminishing security against threats like terrorism.

But the German leader struck a more conciliatory tone Friday, emphasizing the strength of the U.S.-German relationship. "Mutual interest will be the motor for finding common solutions step-by-step," Ms. Merkel said. "We talk about such questions [of NSA activities] openly even when there are differences."

German public opinion remains deeply sensitized by abuses of the Nazi-era Gestapo and former East Germany's Stasi secret police.

The revelations about the NSA over the past several months have led to calls by politicians across the political spectrum in Germany for rethinking ties with the U.S., which still keeps a large military presence here. Experts say that in reality, diminishing the relationship with the U.S. is unlikely, given Europe's dependence on the Americans for military security. "The tail doesn't wag the dog, there's a power differential and there isn't much you can do against it," said Josef Braml of the German Council on Foreign Relations.

Meantime, German officials say the country's leaders are beginning to grasp that the U.S. is unlikely to agree to concrete concessions to Berlin on spying. Lobbying for a "no-spy" alliance with Washington similar to the so-called Five Eyes alliance between the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and New Zealand has so far proved fruitless.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière, a close ally of Ms. Merkel, told ARD television that talks on a no-spy deal continue, "but I'm only narrowly optimistic that it will come to" fruition.

Germany "won't eliminate spying by condemning it," said Jan Techau, director of the think tank Carnegie Europe. The dependence of U.S. partners on its data-collection capabilities means Washington can offer Berlin only "soft gestures" and "little in terms of concrete steps" for its concerns, Mr. Techau added.

France and Britain Agree on Outer Space, but Find No Common Ground on Europe

Britain and France are stepping up their cooperation in outer space, but in Europe they still move in very different orbits.

At a meeting on Friday designed to bridge differences between the two neighbors, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and President François Hollande of France agreed to invest in joint space technology, but then openly clashed over the future of the European Union.

Mr. Cameron’s ambition to revise the union’s rule book and renegotiate Britain’s terms of membership, before holding a referendum in 2017 on whether his country should stay in the 28-country bloc, was dealt a blow by the French president.

A change in European Union treaties, Mr. Hollande made clear, is “not a priority.” France wants a better-run union, he said at a televised news conference, but “if there are going to be amendments to the text, we don’t feel that for the time being they are urgent.”

Standing next to the French president at an air base in Oxfordshire, about 65 miles northwest of London, Mr. Cameron disagreed politely. “Europe needs to change,” he said. “We want to see that renegotiation.”

“There will be further treaty changes coming,” he insisted, adding that he wanted Britain to vote in 2017 “to be part of a reformed union.”

France and Britain have long been on opposing ends of the European Union, with Paris lobbying for deeper political integration and London preferring a larger but looser cooperation among European nations based chiefly on economic ties.

Under pressure from the anti-union United Kingdom Independence Party, which is gaining ground with voters, Mr. Cameron has vowed to loosen British links with the union, which has its headquarters in Brussels. He would have greater leverage to get what he wants in Europe if there were a treaty change giving all leaders veto power.

But like many politicians in France, who were stunned nine years ago when a French referendum on a painstakingly negotiated European Constitution failed, Mr. Hollande appears reluctant to embark on another big negotiation. He is not alone on the Continent. Germany, the union’s biggest nation, has cooled on the idea of significant treaty change, too.

Friday’s meeting, after which the two leaders lunched in a country pub, was the first Anglo-French summit meeting attended by Mr. Hollande. It came at a time of some turmoil for the French president, who languishes in the opinion polls and split from his partner, Valérie Trierweiler, following reports that he had an affair with another woman.

Asked by a British reporter if the president’s private life had made his country an “international joke,” Mr. Hollande declined to comment.

Both leaders did their best to highlight areas of common interest. The Brize Norton air base where they held talks is a “symbol of solidarity” between the two nations, Mr. Hollande said. From there 70 years ago, British planes flew missions in preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy. More recently, planes took off from Brize Norton to refuel French aircraft involved in operations in Mali.

Britain and France are the two biggest military powers in the European Union, and agreements announced included an investment of nearly $200 million in developing armed drones and unmanned underwater vehicles able to find and neutralize seabed mines.

“We have agreed on an exciting new collaboration on space,” added Mr. Cameron, “that will create new economic opportunities for both our industries with a 15 million-pound investment paving the way for joint work on earth observation, telecommunications and space research.”

On economic policy, familiar differences surfaced. Mr. Cameron sidestepped the question of whether he agreed with a Conservative colleague in his cabinet, Grant Shapps, who said recently that the French economy had been “run into the sand.” Growth is rebounding more strongly in Britain, where Mr. Cameron’s Conservative-led coalition has been busy trimming public spending, than in France, where the Socialist Mr. Hollande lowered the retirement age soon after taking office.

“Both of us are facing situations where we have to take difficult economic decisions,” Mr. Cameron said diplomatically, welcoming more recent proposals by Mr. Hollande to reduce French labor costs.

“Of course we are not going to agree about everything,” he said. “François is a French Socialist and I am a British Conservative.”

India feels the squeeze: GDP growth revised to 4.5% from 5% for FY13

However, GDP growth in India for 2011/12 fiscal year was upwardly revised to 6.7 percent from 6.2 percent. (Reuters)
The government on Friday revised the annual economic growth for last fiscal to 4.5% from 5% earlier after industrial and farm sectors expanded at a lower-than-estimated pace.

Analysts said the downward revision provides a favourable base for the calculation of the gross domestic product (GDP) for 2013-14. However, the growth rate for this fiscal may still remain below 5% if the 0.2% drop in industrial production in the April-November period is any indication, they added. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation also revised up the 2011-12 annual GDP expansion pace to 6.7% from 6.2%, which also enhanced the base for the calculation of the 2012-13 GDP.

The latest downward revision was proof that efforts to revive investments by fast-tracking the approvals for big infrastructure projects didn't quite help revive the sentiments last fiscal. Aggregate demand in the economy stayed subdued and growth in all its components – government, private consumption and investments – trailed the previous year's data.

Domestic savings grew 7.8% last fiscal, compared to 7.7% last year. At 30.1% of the GDP, gross domestic savings ratio at current prices dropped from 31.3% in 2011-12 as inflation remained elevated and even consumption inched up marginally. Household savings dropped to 21.9% of the GDP last fiscal from 22.8% in the previous year, partly because people invested in gold, while private corporate savings at 7.1% of the GDP, compared to 7.3% a year before reflecting reduced profitability.

The growth of 7.4% in the gross fixed capital formation (GFCF)--a gauge for fixed investment--in current price last fiscal was much lower than that of 18.9% a year before.

Investment climate was hurt last fiscal by the absence of of speedy clearances of projects along with other policy constaints in an environment of high borrowing costs, said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at CARE Ratings.

The growth in the primary sectors, which includes agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining and quarrying, was revised down to 1% from 1.6% on the basis of latest production data, the Central Statistics Office said. With utilities sectors faring badly, key inputs had remained expensive and in short supply, signaling.

Hitting a woman shows cowardice, says Aamir Khan

Actor Aamir Khan believes that men have to change first if we want to combat violence against women. Domestic violence, he said, shows "cowardice" and is not acceptable.

The actor recently sent a video message to endorse the cause of the One Billion rising campaign, a movement to end violence against women, said a statement.

"I believe that to combat violence against women, we men will first have to change. Raising our hand to strike a woman does not increase our masculinity. Instead, it shows cowardice," Aamir said in the video.

The campaign was proactive last year as well and organised many street plays to promote awareness of violence against women.

"Last year on 14 February, about one billion people in 207 countries rose, sang and danced to this demand. But gang rapes, molestations, dowry deaths, abuse and many more such violence against women have continued," said Kamla Bhasin, who is the campaign lead for South Asia.

"We are not going to let that drag us down. On 14 February 2014 one billion women, men and children everywhere will rise, protest, dance, and demand justice," she added.

This year too, campaigners, activists, NGOs, schools, colleges, artists and citizens across India have created plans for flash mobs, street plays, signature campaigns, public events, combating violence against women in the public and private spaces.

Srijanatmak Manushi Sanstha (SMS), a non-profit organisation that works towards the holistic development of women and children, will organise local awareness campaign, nukkad natak (street-corner plays), flash-mob dance, short film screenings between February 8 to February 14.

Azaad Foundation that runs the only-women driver cabs will also organise a street play and a car rally across Delhi February 1-14.

Today's releases: Abhay-Preeti's One By Two & Oscar nominated 12 Years A Slave

It's a mix of big city romance and American subaltern history at the box office today.

After Salman Khans not so entertaining Jai Ho, real life couple Abhay Deol-Preeti Desai are coming to woo the moviegoers in "One By Two", coming out Friday. A lukewarm response to the former might turn out profitable for the new release, say trade experts.

The love story, which has been directed by Devika Bhagat, revolves around a couple who meet each other while living in Mumbai. They are fed up with their lives and want their situations to change desperately.

The film, made on an budget of about Rs.15 crore, is looking at a fair business opportunity with "Jai Ho" figures not living up to expectations, says Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines.

"If 'Jai Ho' had done well, it would have been very tough for the next film to do well. So this will be beneficial for 'One By Two'," said Thadani.

The film, which will be shown in approximately 1,000-1,200 screens all over India, is the debut production of Abhay's banner - i.e. Films. He has co-produced the film with Viacom 18.

However, the actor has hardly promoted the film, a norm nowadays. The movie, however, made news due to the tiff between Abhay and T-series regarding the delay in the marketing and music launch of "One By Two".

Abhay, who walked the red carpet at an award function with a made up black eye signifying helplessness, brought out the controversy in the open.

Singers like Kailash Kher, Sonu Niigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan and composers such as Vishal Dadlani and Ehsaan Noorani hailed Abhay's courageous outburst against the music label.

However, T-series denied all accusations calling them baseless.

The fight was resolved when Viacom 18 Motion Pictures sent out a press statement saying that everything has been sorted out.

That's not all, From Hollywood, comes a movie that many believe already has its Best Film Oscar sewn up. 12 Years A Slave, based on the real life account of a free black man kidnapped and sold into slavery, stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender.

The cast also features Brad Pitt, a producer on the movie, and Sherlock star Bendeict Cumberbatch.

Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh quits

Amid speculations about that he may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Mumbai commissioner of police Satyapal Singh has resigned from the Indian Police service (IPS) and has applied for voluntary retirement scheme (VRS).

Speaking to a television channel on Friday, Singh confirmed that he had asked for VRS. However, he was evasive about his plans to join the Bharatiya Janata Party as a Lok Sabha candidate from his home town Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh.

"I have offers from many political parties but I have not decided anything yet," he said.

When asked if he would like to serve the people of Maharashtra or Meerut, he replied that he would like serve the people of India.

Singh did not respond to calls and text messages from HT on whether he had asked for voluntary retirement.

Sources said his decision could well come from the fact that he has been due for promotion as the director general (DG) for sometime now. But, even if he is made one he would only be posted as DG of the home guards in the state. He would not be able to make it as the DGP of the state as the current DGP Sanjeev Dayal retires after him.

There have been rumours that he has been looking for a central post as a DGP, especially, in the civil aviation department.

Singh has always been in news for making controversial statements. His decision to keep hotels and bars open only till 1.30am on new year's eve attracted lot of criticism and which was eventually turned down by Bombay high court.

A 1980 batch IPS officer, Singh has served as deputy commissioner in the city and also as joint commissioner of police (crime).

He was also inspector general of police (Konkan range) and additional director general of police (law and order). Singh has also worked as police commissioner Nagpur and Pune, before taking charge as the head of police force in Mumbai.

Indian hockey is on the right track: Teun de Nooijer

It’s been 18 months since you retired from international hockey. Do you still miss playing the game at the highest level?

Of course, you miss playing hockey. I retired from international hockey after the 2012 London Olympics. Last year, I stopped playing for Bloemendaal (club) too. For me, the last (Hockey India League) game was the first one in about five months. So it was like something new again! But I’m still enjoying hockey. I have missed it for a lot of years.

How long do you plan to play in the HIL?

I go year by year and game by game. And I think that’s how it should be if you’re 37, and almost 38 (laughs). But I enjoyed the first game, it was a good result and a nice win.

You had said last year that HIL will be a game changer for Indian hockey. But the results produced by the Indian team in the past 12 months paint a different picture...

It takes time. You go step by step. It won’t happen in one year, not in two years. I think in six to eight years’ time when the HIL develops, you will see the progression. And I think with Terry Walsh, India have a great coach as well. So if it goes on like this, we will see that India is going to play for the medals again.

So we shouldn’t expect any immediate impact?

HIL is really for the long-term impact of Indian hockey, and also for world hockey. I hope and I would like to see HIL develop itself. This year is going to be bigger than last year, and that’s how it should be for the next 20 years — bigger every year. Then you will see Indian hockey develop.

Talking of the current Indian team, they beat Germany in the Hockey World League and showed some improvement overall. What’s your take on the present bunch of players?

Germany... that’s not too bad, eh? I watched a lot of games, and I saw India’s matches too. In all the HIL teams, you see the Indian players, and you see that there is enough talent there to make a good Indian team. But then again, that will also take time. You need experience, you need to play good games, you need to play a lot of games at the highest level. That was the case last year with HIL, and I’m sure it will be the same this year too. Every game will be like 50-50, and that kind of games you need to play a lot.

So you agree with Walsh’s assessment that it will take about one year for India to match the level of the top teams?
Yeah, that’s a really fair assessment. It takes time. But I think Indian hockey is on the right track.

Do you plan to take up coaching?

Of course, it is on my mind. I’m already coaching in Holland with the little kids. I really enjoy it. A couple of years ago I would’ve said no, but I started to coach about five years ago and every day that I’m doing it, I’m enjoying it more.
Maybe coaching the Indian team ...
I’m with the kids in Holland, so no (laughs).

You’re also managing a football team back in Holland — the AZ Alkmaar Football Club. Why the switch from hockey to football?

I think it’s good to have a different kind of view, to be in a different environment. Soccer is another good sport like hockey, but in Holland it’s the biggest sport, like cricket in India. It’s the most professional sport, and I’m stepping into a professional organisation as a manager for my own development. With all the experience I had as a player in hockey and with the experience I’m going to have now in a professional sports organisation with soccer in Holland, it will be great for my development. And also, I’m a soccer fan!

Finally, you’re the highest-paid player in the HIL ($87,400). That’s some pretty good money after retirement, isn’t it?

Of course. But it’s for the fun and enjoyment of the game, and everybody here is earning some money as well. That’s good in life, and it’s good for the professionalism in hockey. But everyone here plays for the love of the game.

Brad Hodge gets call-up for Twenty20 international

Brad Hodge has been called up to play for Australia in the remaining Twenty20 games against England.
Despite its success, the Australian batting line-up that pummelled England’s bowlers on Wednesday night could be significantly altered for the World Twenty20, with Brad Hodge a legitimate candidate to assume a finisher role for the tournament.

Hodge’s contentiously long absence from the national team - almost six years - is set to end on Friday, with the 39-year-old replacing South Africa-bound all-rounder Moises Henriques in Australia’s Twenty20 squad to face England at the MCG.

Despite the Victorian not being named in the initial squad, and Australia having a bulging list of top-order batting candidates, it is believed his chances of featuring in the tournament are good because selectors have been impressed by his ability to score heavily late in innings, which he demonstrated as part of the middle-order role he filled for Rajasthan in last year’s Indian Premier League. In his 21 IPL and Champions League matches last year, typically at number five or six, he finished unbeaten in more than half of his innings to average 55.86 at a strike-rate of 148.11.

Hodge has spent most of his limited-overs career in the top-order but said the shift was devised by his captain at the Royals, Indian great Rahul Dravid.   Read more..

The US golfer is playing the Dubai Desert Classic over the weekend (January 30-February 2), where he will go head-to-head against rising star Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland. He will be flying directly to Delhi after the Dubai event.

"So far it is on but the final confirmation is yet to come," DGC president IVS Juneja is quoted as saying to the Times of India. The news of Woods visit has already sparked off prior arrangements at the DGC, which has been booked for the entire morning session.

Regular club members might not be able to enjoy their daily round of golf during Woods' visit. The 38-year-old will reportedly play the entire 18-holes of the course game from 08:25 (IST) to 12:30 (IST).

"At every hole, a different golf player will play with him," an insider said. "However, others will not be allowed to play in the morning as the entire golf course has been booked," he added.

Fresh after the Dubai event, Woods will be accompanied by his own caddie and his team of physiotherapists.

EU, UK evaluating FDA findings on Ranbaxy's Toansa facility

EU, UK evaluating FDA findings on Ranbaxy's Toansa plant
Days after the US Food and Drug Administration banned import of Ranbaxy products to America from its Toansa plant , health regulators of EU and the UK have said they are evaluating the FDA inspection findings to assess if deviations from Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) have any implication in their markets.

European Medicines Agency (EMA), a body under the European Union, said Ranbaxy Laboratories site in Toansa, Punjab is a supplier of active ingredients for four centrally authorised medicines Enyglid (repaglinide), Repaglinide Krka (repaglinide), Repaglinide Teva (repaglinide) and Nevirapine Teva (nevirapine), besides several non-centrally authorised medicines.

"The EMA and national medicines authorities in the EU have been informed of the recent FDA inspection findings and prohibition of importation or distribution within the US of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from the Ranbaxy Laboratories' site in Toansa, India, due to deviations from GMP identified during the inspection in Toansa," EMA said in an email reply.

"European authorities are currently evaluating the FDA inspection findings, which have been shared under confidentiality arrangements.

"They are also evaluating information requested from the marketing authorisation holders in the EU and from Ranbaxy itself, in order to assess the impact that these GMP deficiencies may have on medicines on the EU market," EMA said.

As part of this evaluation, the EMA and national medicines authorities will take 'any measures necessary to protect' the health of EU patients should a risk to public health be identified, it further said.

Citing manufacturing norm violations, the FDA had last week prohibited Ranbaxy Laboratories from distributing drugs produced at the Toansa unit in the US, including medicines made by the company's Ohm Laboratories facility in New Jersey.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of UK said they are aware of the results of the FDAs inspection relating to GMP issues at the Toansa plant.

MHRA said as of now, they found no evidence that Ranbaxy's medicines in the UK are defective, so people can continue to consumes them as usual.

"We are aware of the results of the FDA's inspection relating to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) issues at Ranbaxy's Toansa plant in India," an MHRA spokesperson said.

"Patient safety is our priority and we are currently working with EU and International regulatory partners to assess whether these findings have any implication for the UK.

There is no evidence that medicines in the UK are defective so people should continue to take their medicines accordingly," the spokesperson added.

Sensex down 196 points after Fed’s decision

Extending losses for the fifth straight session, the benchmark BSE Sensex on Thursday fell over 196 points in early trade on sustained selling by funds after the US Federal Reserve decided to further taper its monetary stimulus programme.

Besides, monthly expiry in the derivatives segment also weighed on the sentiment.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost over 726 points in the past four sessions, fell further by 196.27 points, or 0.95 per cent, to 20,451.03.

All the sectoral indices were trading in negative zone, led by consumer durables, realty and banking.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 52.50 points, or 0.86 per cent, to 6,067.50.

Brokers said a weak trend in Asian trade sparked by emerging markets turmoil coupled with the Federal Reserve deciding to further cut its monetary stimulus by $ 10 billion to $ 65 billion dampened the trading sentiment here.

They said participants adopted a cautious approach keeping in view the monthly expiry in the derivatives segments.

In the Asian region, Japan’s Nikkei Index tumbled 3.33 per cent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index shed 1.22 per cent in early trade.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 1.19 per cent down in Wednesday’s trade.

In Bernanke's final act, Fed cuts stimulus despite market turmoil

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday decided to trim its bond purchases by another $10 billion as it stuck to a plan to wind down its extraordinary economic stimulus despite recent turmoil in emerging markets.

The action was widely expected, although some investors had speculated that the U.S. central bank might put its plans on hold given the jitters overseas.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, who hands the Fed's reins to Vice Chair Janet Yellen on Friday, managed to adjourn his last policy-setting meeting without any dissents from his colleagues. It was the first meeting without a dissent since June 2011 - a sign of how tumultuous Bernanke's tenure has been.

In addition to proceeding with plans to scale back its bond buying, the Fed made no changes to its other main policy plank: its pledge to keep interest rates low for some time to come.

The decision suggests that it would take a serious threat to the U.S. economy before the Fed backs down from a resolve to shelve the asset-purchase program later this year.

Indeed, it offered a somewhat rosier assessment of the U.S. economy's prospects than it did last month, saying "economic activity picked up in recent quarters." It also largely shook off surprisingly soft jobs growth in December. "Labor market indicators were mixed but on balance showed further improvement," it said.

"They really want to move to the sidelines here and get out of the (bond buying) business," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago.

All 17 top Wall Street economists polled by Reuters on Wednesday expect the Fed to wind the program down by year's end, and nearly all believe the Fed won't raise rates until at least the third quarter of 2015.

Major U.S. stock indexes closed down more than 1 percent, while yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note hit the lowest level since late October. The dollar rose against the euro but was little changed against a broad basket of currencies. Read more..

Indian-origin woman banker arrested in UK in ongoing anti-terrorism operation

Indian-origin woman banker arrested in UK in ongoing anti-terrorism operation
A woman banker of Indian origin has been arrested in London reportedly as part of an anti-terrorism operation. Kuntal Patel has been charged with attempted murder.

The 36-year-old banker, the daughter of a magistrate, Meena Patel, will be produced at the Westminster Magistrates' Court this afternoon. She was arrested in Counter Terrorism Command raids, the police said.

The 19-year-old son of a senior British diplomat was also arrested during the raid, but there will be no further action against him, the police said. He was released on bail.

The police have refused to share details about Ms Patel's arrest. But reports said officers in protective clothing were seen searching the Stratford, east London, home of her mother, Meena Patel.

A police statement said, "A 36-year-old woman (B) arrested on 26 January on suspicion of an offence under the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 remains in custody at an east London police station...We are not able to discuss further at this stage." It also said, "Inquiries are ongoing as part of an intelligence-led pre-planned operation."

Ron Manley, a local councillor who has known the Patels for more than 20 years, described them as an "upstanding family," the Daily Telegraph said.

"Meena is a magistrate and used to work for a local authority, Kuntal works in the city and Meena's younger daughter Poonam is a pharmacist. They are a Hindu family and I've known the two girls since they were at primary school. They have always been very polite, very nice girls," Mr Manley was quoted as saying.

The Times reported that counter-terrorism officers conducted the operation due to intelligence that police might find dangerous chemicals, but the focus was on potential criminal rather than terrorist offences.

The police said there was nothing to suggest that the public was at risk. Britain's Foreign Office has declined to comment on Ms Patel's arrest.

Newspaper reports said the teen arrested on suspicion of an offence under anti-terrorism laws and later released was the son of a first secretary -- typically the third rung below an ambassador and the deputy head of mission in an embassy. The diplomat had worked in Brazil and Cuba, the reports said.

Big decision on Telangana likely today, will AP CM quit in protest?

In what may be seen as a big day for Andhra Pradesh, the President's deadline to the state Assembly to return the draft Telangana Bill to him ends on Thursday.

Big decision on Telangana likely today, will Andhra CM quit in protest?
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy had requested a three-week extension of the deadline. However, sources in the Home Ministry said that the Centre was likely to present the Telangana Bill in Parliament even if the state does not pass a resolution.

It is likely that the Andhra Speaker will return the draft Bill to the President without a 'yes' or a 'no' from the Assembly. The Speaker is likely to just encapsulate what the MLAs speak on the Bill. The President will then forward the Speaker's note and the draft Bill to the Home Ministry.

The Home Ministry will attempt to bring in a Cabinet note on February 7 seeking to present the Bill before Parliament. The new state will come into existence once the Telangana Bill is passed by Parliament.

Meanwhile, in the state, all eyes are on the final move of the Centre. The YSR Congress, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, has vehemently opposed the division.

The Congress, however, is divided, with its Telangana MLAs and MPs backing the demand for bifurcation and the CM himself opposing it.

Reddy has even issued threats to the Congress high command that he will quit if the new state is created. According to some reports, he may quit before Parliament meets to debate the Telangana Bill. He is already in talks with anti-Telangana Congress leaders and may even float his own political party.

The TDP's stand, however, is ambiguous. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has been demanding justice for both the regions. He is likely to tie-up with the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The TRS, the pro-Telangana party of K Chandrashekhara Rao, has already warned the Centre of dire consequences if the new state is not created before the Lok Sabha polls.

Andhra Pradesh is going to see both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections held simultaneously in the next three months.Read more..

New Zealand seek to deny India that winning feeling

Kane Williamson hit two fours and two sixes, New Zealand v India, 4th ODI, Hamilton, January 28, 2014Big Picture
The series is gone, the No. 1 ranking too for now, but how are we doing with the memory of winning a match? India need to be reminded of that feeling.

Their long sojourn away from Asia began with the tour of South Africa in December and now halfway through the New Zealand tour, they are yet to win a match. They must be reaching a stage where they start to doubt themselves and everything around them. When they are reminded of their previous long trips outside Asia. Especially worrisome will be that except for the Wanderers Test they have never really been ahead in a contest despite whatever encouragement they can draw from the rearguards that ran New Zealand close in three ODIs.

This might be a dead rubber, but India need to reassure themselves they can win before they go into the Test series. That this is not the same nightmare of 2011 playing itself out again. Somehow, through individual brilliance or through dogged teamwork, India need to win a match. New Zealand need to do everything within their powers to convince India that they are indeed back on the treadmill of defeat. They will not want to be very generous with resting players. They will want to maintain that psychological hold over Indian bowlers, they will want to keep denying the Indian batsmen easy runs, and with that any confidence going into the Tests.

In the spotlight
Kane Williamson has been beating India at their own game. He is superb against spin, he is never hurried, he clams the whole innings down, he doesn't take undue risks, and has been setting up solid platforms for the hitters to go big. Actually he has spoilt the big hitters with his accuracy: if he scores 50 or more in Wellington, he will share the longest streak of fifties for New Zealand with Roger Twose, Martin Guptill and Andrew Jones.

MS Dhoni is one run short of 8,000 ODI runs, and will be the fastest to that mark for batsmen who bat so low down the order. Amid all the chaos around him - the ordinary bowling, the struggling batting - Dhoni has displayed a Williamson-like consistency scoring 40, 56, 50 and 79 not out. Can he conjure something to take his side one step ahead and actually register a win?

New Zealand have called up uncapped Canterbury quick Matt Henry, who took a first-class five-for last week. There might be a few bowlers with niggles, but Nathan McCullum also said they were pretty keen to "nail the series 4-0", so don't expect changes just for the sake of it. Read more..

Vijay Bahuguna for quick release of Rs 300 crore from Centre for road repair

Vijay Bahuguna for quick release of Rs 300 crore from Centre for road repair
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has sought immediate release of Rs 300 crore from the Centre to the Border Roads Organization (BRO) for repairing the vast network of damaged roads in calamity-hit Uttarakhand.

Bahuguna met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Tuesday and said that there was widespread resentment over the slow progress due to lack of funds with the BRO in reconstruction of major roads damaged in the June calamity, an official release said.

The amount has already been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Uttarakhand headed by the Prime Minister himself.

Bahuguna said Singh was informed that Congress MLAs were prepared to stage dharna in Delhi on the issue and had called it off only at his (CM's) behest.

The BRO has been entrusted with the task of repairing 1510 km of roads in the hill state whereas the National Highways Authority is in charge of rebuilding 750 km of roads.

The Chief Minister, who had earlier met Union Surface Transport and Highways Minister Oscar Fernandes, told Singh as to what transpired at his meeting with the Minister and asked him to expedite the release of funds to the BRO so that road reconstruction work could be completed before the start of the Char Dham Yatra season in April-May.

At his meeting with Fernandes, Bahuguna opposed the suggestion that road repair be handed over to a public sector organization and insisted that the National Highways Authority and BRO were best suited for the job.

Handing over the job to other agencies would lead to avoidable delay, with an adverse impact on the tourism sector of Uttarakhand, the Chief Minister said.

Bahuguna also informed Singh that 10 new divisions of the PWD have been constituted to ensure timely completion of road projects worth Rs 2000 crore funded by the World Bank and ADB.

The Prime Minister has promised to speedily resolve the issue by releasing the required funds to the BRO as early as possible.
